Approved Snacks Information

Dear Parents/Guardians,

You are receiving this information as a reminder of Hampton City Schools’ policy on acceptable foods that can be brought to classroom celebrations. Some of the reasons it is important to bring only foods that have been approved are:

  1. Food allergies are a serious medical condition. If foods are brought in that a student is allergic to then they may have an allergic reaction resulting in an emergency hospital visit. Even small amounts of a food allergen can cause a reaction.

  2. One in every 13 school-aged children have food allergies: 2 per classroom.

  3. 25% of the reactions at school didn’t have a diagnosed allergy. So even when we know students with allergies, there have been some who have had no reaction to a food up to

the day an unauthorized food was brought in.

  4. The most common food allergies are: Peanuts/Tree nuts, Dairy products, Shellfish/Fin

    fish, Egg, Wheat and Soy.

Health Services and Food & Nutrition Services ask that if you are bringing food, beverage, or dessert for a celebration, you get prior approval with the teacher of the class your student attends. The teacher is aware of the food allergies in his or her classroom. On the day you bring the food, beverage, or dessert to the school, the item(s) must be checked by the main office staff. If it doesn’t meet the food, beverage, or dessert list attached, it will not be allowed in for the celebration.

It is the goal of Health Services and Food & Nutrition Services to foster a safe environment for students consuming food and beverages during their school day. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to talk with your student’s principal or school nurse, Food and Nutrition Services, or Health Services.

Respectfully,

Edwina Forrest, MBS, RD, SNS Director of Food and Nutrition Services Office: 727-2350

Glory Gill, RN, BSN, MPA Health Service Coordinator Office: 727-2363
